The New York Times visited author Douglas Coupland in Vancouver, (Generation X, Life After God, Microserfs), who purchased the mid-century house directly behind his own when it came on the market. Keeping it's architectural integrity was crucial for Coupland, who uses his second home to display his impressive and colorful art collection, many of his own works (he's also an artist).
In the photo above, he is applying white legos to a post. The Times gives no explanation for this, but I expect the photographer asked him to do something "artsy".
Downy Fabric Softener is Coupland's own creation.
A fan of Damien Hirst, Coupland has arranges spools of thread to resemble the Dot Paintings. "When guests come over to the house Mr. Coupland invites them to pull on the string."
