This here is a novel idea: decorate your couch and find you inner urban planner. The Build Your Block line of pillows are inspired by designer Patrick Chirico's photographs of buildings in his neighborhood. Lay out a customized Brooklyn landscape (there's even a bodega!) by mixing and matching the five designs, each available in two colorways.

I'm so happy to have discovered Lauren Cohen's work on the lazy Sunday morning. Her colorful paintings depicting carnivals, sporting events, sweets, and, well, lots of weirdness.
Her artist statement:
Lauren Cohen’s work is about the absurdity of every day life, specifically people’s relationships toward each other, their environment, marketed desires and the conflicts that result from them all. She uses the language of painting and drawing to produce Bosch-esque land scapes populated by numb automatons who crowd a naive candy-coated utopia. Cohen is interested in people’s want for power and triumph but is also fascinated with the usual struggle or failure that coincides.

Inked with tar-covered birds, drowning fish, and the Virgin Mary holding a gas nozzle, "Drill Baby" is certainly no bundle of joy. The child of artist Jason Clay Lewis, sculpted from rubber and plaster, is an uncomfortable reminder (to say the least) of the extensive environmental damages caused by the BP oil spill.

This wonderful, etherial freshwater pearl chain headpiece adorned with a big 'ol raw crystal geode has me salivating! What would be an appropriate occasion to rock such a thing? Making Fantasia magnificent, I suppose.
Handmade in a limited edition by Littledoe exclusively for I Don't Like Mondays, proceeds go to Designers Against Aids. Designer and musician Chase Cohl (great name), the mastermind behind Littledoe says she finds inspiration from the "idea of an urban witch traipsing around Manhattan.... I think growing up in rock n roll, having had a sort of gypsy childhood and traveling to loads of different places allows me to be a bit fearless when it comes to fashion. Rock n roll sort of allows for being able to wear costumes every day, which I love." Her work was recently shot for the cover of Spanish vogue by Patrick Demarchelier.
Tom Sale, aka Pinky Diablo, Crafts these "skoons" from vintage silver, and are available in both tea- and table-skoon sizes for $45 a piece. They don't seem too, er, functional, but I have an aunt who collects state spoons. I smell stocking stuffer!

A formidable student of perception, German artist Juergen Bergbauer photographs architectural forms and then completely removes them from the context of their surroundings by sitting them on a nondescript, off-white background. A step away from traditional photography, these works allow for different kinds of perception - as graphic, simulation or icon placed in an empty storage space. Lovely.
Wow. Based in Copenhagen, avante garde fashion label Vilsbøl de Arce has won Design Talent of the Year at the 2010 Danish Fashion Awards. For the designers, Prisca Vilsbøl and Pia de Arce, fashion is art revolving around human form. The label's Fall Collection (awesome!) is inspired by human anatomy:" laser-cutting leather to resemble a rib cage splayed open, or a body undergoing a dissection. Other fabrics were quilted and ribbed to give the appearance of pulled musculature." Fans include Lady Gaga and Rihanna.

I posted an image of Kate MacDowell's work back in December (look!), but her beautiful work is worthy of a more thorough revisit. Amazingly, she hand sculpts each piece out of porcelain, often building a solid form and then hollowing it out. while smaller forms are built petal by petal. Wowza!
