When I think of vertical gardening, I picture ivy creeping up a stately brick manor, but the New York Times had a wonderful story in the Thursday style section about indoor vertical gardens. View the inspiring slideshow here. Those with little to no outdoor space are turning to living walls.
Matthew McGregor-Mento put 400 plants in his vertical garden in Manhattan.
So I decided to dig a little deeper. Michael Hellgren is a landscape architect who specializes in creating vertical gardens such as the one in the photos below, located in the lobby of a new office building in Sweden.

Another inspiring site, Flora Grubb Gardens, features vertical gardens made of succulent plants. They resemble abstract paintings, or an alien landscape viewed from above. Beau-ti-ful!
Seriously, wow. I so want to do that! I love the smell of plants. I'm sure the air must be so much crisper in those apartments. Mine usually smells like my roommate's shoes... Eww. I also like the plants as art. My mom and I used to do that in her garden. She's mostly into roses now. She does have a couple of climbing roses though.
